GBC Awaso Mine Overview
GBC’s Awaso Mine concession spans 35.5 sq.km, constituting 0.3% of the Western North Region. Mining operations began in 1940 at the Kanayerebo Mine and transitioned to the Inchinso Pit in 1969, part of the Awaso Group of Hills, which are rich in bauxite deposits.
Key Features:
Location: The mine is situated on a plateau 515 meters above sea level, extending from Sefwi-Bekwai to Asawinso.
Bauxite Hills: Our mining lease encompasses five bauxite-capped hills: Afumba, Boakakhirri, Subri, Inchiniso, and Kanayerebo.

Mining Methods: We employ both surface mining and drill and blast techniques, with a focus on increasing surface mining to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
Production: Annual Output: The Run of Mine (ROM) averages 2.5 million metric tonnes of high-grade bauxite (Al2O3 – 52%).
Transportation: The bauxite is transported in 45 cubic metre haulage trucks to the Takoradi Port, approximately 240km away, for shipment to customers in China and Europe.
Commitment to Sustainability: GBC is dedicated to aligning our operations with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, aiming to lead
responsibly in the mining industry.
Enhancements for Efficiency and Capacity
In response to the increasing volumes of bauxite being transported from the mine to the port, we have significantly expanded our port stockpile area. This enhancement is crucial for accommodating the growing quantities of bauxite and ensuring that our operations remain efficient and productive. Embracing Sustainable Mining
For over 80 years, GBC has relied on drill and blast techniques, but we are now shifting to surface mining to enhance efficiency and reduce our environmental footprint. This transition minimizes land disturbance, improves safety, and fosters better community relations. By optimizing material recovery and investing in our workforce, we are committed to responsible resource management and governance. Join us in shaping a sustainable future for mining, where innovation and responsibility go hand in hand. To enhance our capabilities and increase production from 1.2 million tonnes to 2.5 million tonnes annually. Our surface miner is at the core of this transformation, supported by investment in a robust fleet of equipment, including additional surface miners, haulage trucks, and dump trucks.

Port
Increased Capacity for Bauxite Storage
Our expanded stockpile area allows us to manage larger volumes of bauxite efficiently. This increased capacity ensures smooth operations, minimizes bottlenecks, and meets demand promptly by aligning mining output with transportation logistics.
Enhanced Infrastructure with Flag Lighting System
We have installed a state-of-the-art flag lighting system in our stockpile area, ensuring safe and efficient operations after sunset. This investment maximizes productivity and helps us meet shipping schedules effectively.
Investment in Heavy Equipment
We have invested in additional heavy equipment, including dozers and excavators, to streamline bauxite movement within the stockpile area. These machines efficiently transfer and organize large volumes of bauxite for loading onto the conveyor system, improving turnaround times and productivity, even during peak periods.
Completion of the Head Office Renovation
We are proud to announce the completion of our head office renovation, designed to meet global standards for functionality and sustainability. Featuring energy-efficient systems, ergonomic workspaces, and advanced technology, the new office fosters collaboration and innovation. This investment enhances our working environment and reflects our commitment to excellence as we engage with stakeholders worldwide, positioning us as a forward-thinking organization in the mining
industry.
