Ghana Bauxite Company now under Ghanaian ownership as Parliament ratifies new mining lease for company

Ghana’s Parliament has unanimously ratified the government’s mining lease granted to the Ghana Bauxite Company for operations at Awaso in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

A high powered delegation comprising mostly the new Board Members of the Ghana Bauxite Company (GBC) led by its able Executive Chairman, Mr. Isaac Ofori Poku, has participated in this year’s 2022 Bauxite and Alumina Conference held this week in the USA, in faraway Miami.

Bauxite was first discovered in Awaso , in the Western North Region of Ghana – West Africa in 1921 by the then Gold Coast Geological Survey Department. The bauxite mine has been in operation since the 1940s and produces premium trihydrate bauxite with typical alumina (Al2O3) content of 52% and low silica of 1.5%. The mine remains Ghana’s first and only operating bauxite mine in Ghana and exports approximately 1.8 million tonnes of bauxite annually through the Takoradi Port.
