Our History
GBC is built on the proud heritage of Ghanaians. We have been operating for the past eight decades, contributing high grade trihydrate bauxite to global refineries that through their innovation of alumina and aluminium have made modern life possible for the world, in cluding our soceity in which we operate, and our people.
Bauxite discovered on Afao Hills by the then Gold Coast Geological Survey.
1921
British Aluminium Co Ltd (B.A.C.) granted concession
1928
Commencement of mining.
1940
First cargo left Takoradi harbor on 15th May
1941
Rail line extended from Dunkwa to Awaso
1944
Aerial ropeway constructed Kanayerebo to Washing Plant
1954
Mining commenced at Ichiniso
1969
Government of Ghana acquired 55% of Ghana Bauxite
1974
B.A.C. sold its 45% shares to British Alcan Inc.
1982
Divestiture - Alcan 80%, GoG 20%
1997
Alcan was acquired by Rio Tinto to become Rio Tinto Alcan
1998
Rio Tinto Alcan sold its 80% shares to Bosai Minerals Group, China.
2010
Bosai Minerals Group, China sold its 80% shares to Ofori - Poku Company Limited ("OPCL"), a member of IOP Group.
